Agency Description:
The mission of the Lesbian Resource Center is to visibly and actively promote the health and well-being of the diverse community of lesbians, bisexual women, and other women who partner with women through education, advocacy, resources, and referrals in the North Carolina Triangle area.
Project Description:
The Lesbian Resource Center (LRC) has received funding to support the development of an enhanced breast health awareness and education program targeting lesbians, bisexual women, and other women who partner with women living in Durham, Orange, and Wake Counties. This program will consist of two arms: (1) the development, implementation, and evaluation of a tailored breast health education curriculum targeting lesbian and bisexual women, and (2) the promotion of breast health awareness through the implementation of a breast casting (a three-dimensional work of art made by skillfully applying plaster of Paris to a woman’s naked torso).
Student Responsibilities:
The student will be responsible for: (1) developing the tailored breast health education curriculum; (2) conducting a training with volunteers who will assist the student in implementing the health education curriculum; (3) coordinating the production of an instructional video for breast casting and breast health education; and (4) conducting the evaluation of the program.
Desired Skills & Experience:
- Experience desired but not required: prior work with vulnerable populations, particularly lesbians, bisexual women, and other women who partner with women; intervention development, implementation, and/or evaluation; and issues related to breast health.
- Required skills: detail-oriented; excellent organizational skills; ability to work independently
Practicum Details:
Activities to begin February and continue through December 2007. From February through April and October through December, the time commitment should be no more than 15-20 hours per month. From May through September, the total time commitment will be approximately 300 hours.
