Reading Group

The fourth Thursday of every month, a group of women gathers in the cozy nooks of Chapel Hill’s Women’s Center ( directions) to discuss issues vital to the health and well-being of women who partner with women. Certain works of literature that are of interest are read as well. Works discussed so far include: Tipping the Velvet, The Price of Salt, Once Upon a Dyke, The Wrestling Party, Confessions of a Failed Southern Lady, and Odd Girl Out.

The group is free-of-charge, confidential, and welcomes women of all ages and backgrounds who are interested in lesbian health. The Lesbian Reading Group meets from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m, the fourth Thursday of the month. For more information about upcoming Reading Group meetings, go to trianglelrc.org/readinggroup.html, or email lrcreadinggroup@yahoo.com.

Community Outreach and Workshops

The LRC staffs information tables with health materials and information pertaining to women who partner with women (WPW) at local and statewide events. Workshop topics range from home buying tips to legal resources for same sex couples to breast casting events in celebration of women's bodies and breast health. If you would like LRC to table at your event or work with you to plan an educational workshop, please email us at trianglelrc@yahoo.com. For information about upcoming workshops, watch our home page or our events page.

Health Care Provider Training

Our physical and emotional health may be the most important factors in determining our everyday quality of life. Health care is an integral part of feeling good and staying well, but seeking health care can often be a frightening or frustrating experience. Homophobia and a lack of knowledge concerning our specific needs are barriers to adequate health care for lesbians. Many of us are uninsured or underinsured. The cumulative effect may be sub-standard care or no treatment at all. We can, however, become advocates for our own health and wellness. We can work to improve the health care experience.

The LRC is committed to working for change within the health care system. We offer training to health care staff and providers throughout North Carolina. These workshops help sensitize providers and to break down barriers that would otherwise prevent the best possible care for lesbians. We have trained staff and providers at the Piedmont Women’s Health Center, UNC Student Health Services, Wake Forest University, and will soon visit Duke Student Health Center. The positive feedback we’ve received from patients and providers assures us that our workshops are effective and worthwhile.
